Der Baseler Streetart-Künstler und Graffiti-Writer Smash 137 beeinflusst seit Jahren mit seinem Stil nachhaltig die internationale Writer-Szene. Smash 137 ist besessen von Buchstaben. Getrieben von seiner Obsession für westliche Kaligraphie ist er einer der aktivsten Writer weltweit, wodurch sein Schriftzug so manches Objekt im öffentlichen Raum von New York bis Moskau ziert.

Im Rahmen der Ausstellung “Urban Feedbacks”, die im Januar 2008 in Basel zu sehen war, realisierte er eine Installation, in der auf ironische Weise die Realität eines Writers in Szene setzt. Auf mehr als 2500 Putzschwämmen, auf einer Wand befestigt, sprühte er in Schwarz seinen Namen und nimmt Bezug auf Reaktionen erboster Hausbesitzer, die möglichst schnell und gründlich den ärgerlichen Farbschmierereien entgegentreten wollen. Gleichzeitag kann der Schwamm aber auch als Symbol der Vergänglichkeit des Werkes gelesen werden und die damit einhergehende Endlichkeit.

Who is No New Enemies?
No New Enemies is an international network of artists, activists,
academics and passionate people, which began as an open minded
collective who enjoyed collaborating on the streets for various
reasons; one of which was to communicate with a broad and democratic
public, with people ‘like us.’ The network aims to place art in public
spaces, encourage the exploration of media aesthetics outside of
institutional settings and to support young artists with various tools
and opportunities. Value is placed on responsibility, risk and
process, as opposed to end product, and questions to the citizen/
consumer dialect constantly posed.
Today, NNE contributors are independently producing a broad range of
influential cultural narratives: from music video to animated films,
from urban communication to illustration and product or graphic
design. At the same time, they are continuing to give work away on the
streets, to produce art for the sake of art and communication, and
then sharing it with others. Some of our members are graduates of
reputable art schools, some are self trained. Some spend most of the
time in front of a screen and others continue to employ the streets as
studio. All are top geezers.

In addition to several street level projects, the network has produced
collaborative shows working closely with members such as the London
Police, Bo130, Microbo, Morcky, the Boghe, Galo, Nomad, Lucy
Mclauchlan, Logan Hicks, Will Barras, G, L’Atlas, Ephameron, Victor
Castillo, Guifari, Nico Stumpo and several others. nonewenemies.net
